DRIVER RISK ASSESSMENT – why is it so important?
Any employee who drives whilst at work (using a company vehicle or their own) presents a risk to both themselves and their employer. Responsible companies ensure that their employee risk is assessed, and are aware that: -
- Health and Safety guidelines state that companies with5 or more employees have a legal obligation to assess the risk of their employees.
- The Corporate Manslaughter Act 2007 and Health and Safety (Offences) Act 2008 has made it easier to prosecute employers who do not show a duty of care towards their employees. Fines made under this Act could be as much as £500,000.
Traditional risk assessment and driver training is costly– up to £350 per driver. There is also the additional business cost of loss of productivity to factor in.
A-Class Driver Training Limited provides a more cost effective alternative: -
E60 – the on-line driver risk assessment tool.
- It is quick - takes 20 minutes
- Can be done in employee’s own time on any internet connected PC or laptop
- Focuses attention where training is most necessary
- Assesses a specific employee’s driving risk – it is NOT a psychometric test which may not accurately reflect the driver's competence at the wheel
- Results are quickly available permitting timely discussion of needs and planning of further actions required
- Drivers are categorised as low, medium or high risk
- Low-risk drivers can do the test again in 12 months time (HSE requirements insist that processis done annually)
- Medium-risk drivers can do further training, again online to save costs
- High-risk drivers can undergo in-vehicle training. This can be specifically tailored to the driver’s inadequacies as the risk assessment highlights the problem areas. These could be, for example, attitude, speeding, observation or planning.
A company following this routine could saveup to 60% on its driver training costs.
